Testers said the pockets were well sized and comfortably placed for easy access to things like phones and wallets. With its light fabric and mesh lining, the Watertight II is more breathable than our other picks—none of the testers worried about overheating. Another tester wished for an inside pocket, too. Some of our testers thought the hood was maybe too deep, and one tester wanted a tab on the peak to help adjust it. Testers also noted that the zippers were a little small to grab hold of and that they occasionally caught in the fabric. Who this is for: Travelers and commuters looking for a stylish rain shell to keep in the car, at the office, or in a suitcase.

The fabric is unlined, it but repelled water just as well as other coats in our tests. The J. Jill Fit Packable Anorak. For a more defined fit, you can cinch the waist on the Fit Packable Anorak. Roomy double pockets can hold large items like a water bottle or an umbrella. It has a cinched waist that adds shape to the coat, and testers generally thought the design was the most modern.

Our testers all found that this jacket was true to size, with room for layering underneath. It was still my favorite raincoat of those we tested. We like this jacket best for travel because it packs down into a pouch without skimping on style or features. And unlike the recommendations in our guide to outdoor rain shells , all of which also pack down small but feel more at home on mountain trails, the Fit Packable Anorak looks ready for city sightseeing and a casual dinner. This coat had more pockets than others we considered, and they were roomy enough for essentials and then some without making the coat look bulky.

The fabric is almost paper-thin, which makes it more fluid than our other picks. You can move around freely without that sense of restriction that coats often give. Flaws but not dealbreakers: Our testers had mixed reactions to the fabric on the Fit Packable Anorak. One tester, who said she runs hot, found that it clung to the body after a warm, rainy day commuting in New York City.

We think the white will get dirty fast on city streets. The zipper was small compared with those on our other picks, which frustrated one of our testers. We also noticed that the coat stretched a bit after testing, but not enough to change the fit. It was also a little fussy to fold into a pouch, and it was pretty wrinkly when we opened it back up. None of these flaws felt insurmountable for a stylish, size-inclusive raincoat. This treated cotton coat repels water just as well as any jacket we tested, but the soft fabric and sharp details place it a step above the average crinkly rain shell.

Who this is for: People who are willing to pay more for luxurious-feeling fabric and stylish details from an iconic English brand. We think it works best in chillier weather. Testers said this hood had a comfortable depth.

A durable two-way zipper adds a pop of color. The Cotton Hunting Coat has a ventilation flap for extra breathability. They spend a lot of time being damp and looking good regardless. Not only did our testers love the look of this coat, but they also found it to be significantly more breathable and better-fitting than coats from Stutterheim, another well-known brand from a rainy country, Sweden. We found that the Hunter left more room for layers than the Stutterheim Stockholm and Ekeby coats, which were tight around the middle for several of our testers.

Testers were able to layer under the Hunter, whereas the Stutterheim Stockholm and Ekeby coats had a more restrictive fit. The roomy pockets are easily accessible. Our testers agreed that it was probably best for colder temperatures, but it did have a mesh lining and a back flap to help keep it breathable. It comes in six colors, including crossing-guard yellow and bright red, which we think are fun and cheeky choices for such a chic raincoat.

The arms on the Cotton Hunting Coat were too tight for some testers. The soft fabric and stylish details make the Cotton Hunting Coat look chicer than an average rain shell. Flaws but not dealbreakers: We tried the Cotton Hunting Coat in a range of sizes, including the XXL, which one tester found to be so tight in the arms that it was hard to move around. With a detachable insulation layer, the Girl On The Go works as a comfy raincoat or winter coat.

We love the idea of a single coat that can carry you through rainy days and moderate winter weather. With the liner, the Girl On The Go coat feels toasty and snug without having the bulk of a winter parka. Without the liner, this trench is roomy but still stylish. The six neutral colors should work for most tastes. Our testers had mixed reviews on the depth of the hood.

Coats & Jackets

The Girl On The Go has a removable hood, so you can convert the jacket to a trench style. Lined pockets are a cozy touch. The brushed fabric is soft to the touch. The pockets are lined in a soft, fleecy fabric that feels wonderful on the hands, and the two-way zippers feel sturdy and durable.

One tester did have a coat with a sticky zipper, but we think it was a fluke. The seams are taped to keep water from leaking through as on the L. Bean coats, and the Girl On The Go is our only pick with a removable hood, if you prefer a trench style. We observed this with a magnifier—the coat had little fibers sticking up from the surface of the weave, and the more we washed it, the more fuzzy fibers we saw.

We think this affects how quickly it repels water. It kept our testers dry and never looked or felt saturated, but without a smooth surface for water to roll off of, some water soaked into the coat. Also, our testers disagreed on the hood—one found it too deep, one found it too shallow, and another found it just right. Other options: non-insulated. I know a lot about testing fabric after my years here at Wirecutter, so I left the cozy comfort of my usual bedding testing to venture out into the cold, wet world of raincoats.

For this guide, I prioritized coats with inclusive sizing. Bean , to ask about the fabrics and features people really need in an everyday raincoat. The raincoats in this guide are meant for day-to-day life. These jackets will all repel water equally well, so consider the ones that come in styles, sizes, lengths, and prices that match your needs.

We focused on finding coats that came in inclusive sizes and versatile colors, and in a range of lengths, styles, and warmths that would work for different urban lifestyles. We also considered coats to suit a range of budgets.

Warmth Rating

There are so many raincoats in the world. We also went on a shopping trip in New York City so that several staffers could check coats for sizing, fit, and style. Lots of sizes: Finding the best-quality raincoats in the most sizes was our top priority.
